Wawanosh Valley Conservation Area

Wawanosh is a large property that contains a variety of natural habitats. Both the Belgrave Creek and the Maitland River flow through the Conservation Area. The Wawanosh Nature Centre is located here and the site is used extensively for conservation education programs and special events. Both the Maitland Conservation Foundation and the John Hindmarsh Environmental Trust Fund support programs at the Nature Centre.

Seasonal Camping at Wawanosh Park Conservation Area

You'll enjoy the quiet, friendly atmosphere of Wawanosh Park Conservation Area. The property is situated along the scenic Maitland River. Some campsites in the park are nestled in a grove of white cedar trees while others are in more open areas. There's a large picnic shelter on the grounds that can be reserved. The property also features easy access to the river and walking trails.

A group campsite is available for organized groups. Call us to make a group camping reservation.

To the fishing enthusiast the Maitland River means catches of bass, chinook salmon, and rainbow trout. If you'd like to try some paddling, the Maitland River provides a variety of conditions ranging from calm waters for the novice to spring rapids that will test the skills of any canoeist. Wawanosh Park also offers the opportunity to put your feet up and enjoy the sights and sounds of river birds and animals.

Recently work has been underway at the park on the Wawanosh Creek Restoration Project. This demonstration project involves the removal of barriers to fish, incorporating natural channel design techniques in the creek, establishing buffers along the creek and installing sediment traps. Visit the demonstration section of the website for more information.

Wawanosh Park Conservation Area park is located eleven kilometres south of County Road # 86 (Amberley Rd.), just east of County Road # 22 (Donnybrook Line).
