Putting Down Roots

The Maitland Valley Conservation Authority has a long history of planting trees throughout the watershed and undertaking forest management activities at Conservation Areas. Since 1951 the MVCA has planted more than 1,300,000 trees.

1. Reforestation Assistance Service

The MVCA provides technical and financial assistance to landowners for the planting of seedlings on marginal land. MVCA staff will visit your site to develop a planting plan and determine appropriate species. Landowners may choose to plant the trees themselves or use an MVCA planting crew. Applications for this service are processed in the fall. The seedlings are planted in the spring, usually in late April and early May. Please contact Dave Grummett at dgrummett@mvca.on.ca or 519-335-3557 for further information.

2. Roadside/Windbreak Planting Service

The MVCA also provides large stock trees to landowners and municipalities for planting in windbreaks or along roadsides. MVCA staff will work with landowners to determine the most appropriate species for the planting site. Applications are processed in the fall and planting is done in the spring. Please contact Dave Grummett at dgrummett@mvca.on.ca or 519-335-3557 for further information.

Planting trees and shrubs on erosion-prone land or in buffer strips along watercourses may be eligible for funding assistance through the Huron Clean Water Project or the Wellington Country Rural Water Quality Program. Please contact Doug Hocking at dhocking@mvca.on.ca or 519-335-3557 for application information.
