Watershed Conditions Statement – Water Safety Update

Watershed Conditions Statement – Water Safety Update

    January 12, 2020

Watershed Conditions Statement – Water Safety
    Update

Temperatures persisted above zero until 1:00 am to 3:00 am Sunday across the Maitland and Nine Mile River watersheds. The exception to this was the Lucknow area where temperatures went below zero around 10:00 am on Saturday. Total rainfall varied from 50 to 80 mm across the watersheds, with little freezing rain reported.

The rivers in headwaters areas including, Harriston, Listowel, Blyth and Lucknow, peaked overnight. Downstream of these areas the rivers will continue to rise throughout the day (Sunday). Since the larger rivers are continuing to rise, we have asked municipal staff to monitor low lying roads.

Flooding is currently not expected beyond traditional low lying areas but water levels and flows are expected to remain high until Tuesday.

Residents are reminded to use caution near all watercourses. Slippery and unstable stream banks, and extremely cold and fast-flowing water will combine to create hazardous conditions.

This message will remain in place until 4:00 pm on Tuesday Jan. 14, 2020. Maitland Conservation staff will continue to monitor conditions and will update this message if conditions change.

Please note that the Flood Watch for Port Albert issued on Friday Jan. 10, 2020 remains in place.
