Tree harvesting will be underway at Wawanosh Valley Conservation Area over the next several weeks. This will include removing diseased and damaged trees as well as thinning plantation areas. This work will help keep the property safe for visitors and the woodlots healthy.
Work will begin on the west side of the river (where Wawanosh Park campground is located) on Wed. Dec. 22, 2021. The west side of the property will be closed until work is completed around the end of December. While this initial work is underway, the east side (where the Nature Centre is located) will remain open to visitors during day-light hours.
Tree removal will begin near the Nature Centre (east side of the river) on January 4, 2022. While the work is underway the property will be closed to the public due to safety concerns. We’re not yet able to provide an exact date of when the property will reopen. The contractors will be using a selective harvesting method which is time consuming. In addition, progress will be dependent on weather conditions.
Once the harvesting work is completed it will take some time for Maitland Conservation staff to clear debris off the trails.
We will provide updates as the project progresses and provide an estimated reopening date.
Please keep in mind that that east side of Wawanosh Valley Conservation Area (Nature Centre location) will be closed to all public access from January 4th until the harvesting is completed and Maitland Conservation staff have inspected the site and determined that the trails are safe to reopen.
We understand that this closure will be significant inconvenience for visitors and we apologize for the disruption in access.
