Update on Tree and Shrub Removal in Harriston

Update on Tree and Shrub Removal in Harriston

May 2, 2019

Tree and Shrub Removal from the Harriston Floodplain

Over the past three weeks trees and shrub removal has been underway along the banks and floodplain of the Maitland River in Harriston. This work is being done downstream of the Arthur St. bridge to ensure that water is not obstructed during high flow events. In addition, debris left from June 2017 flood is being removed from the floodplain. Although the removal of this vegetation looks jarring, it is an important step in ensuring that water flows are able to move downstream during floods.

The second phase of this project involves leveling out piles of soil in the floodplain left over from old dredging activities. The area will then be seeded down. Again, the removal of the soil piles will help to ensure that water is not obstructed during high flows.

The Town of Minto has recently received a 50% grant through the National Disaster Mitigation Program. This grant will be used for an evaluation process to determine the preferred option for flood mitigation in Harriston. Once the final flood mitigation option is chosen, longer term plans for the area downstream of the Arthur St. bridge will be developed. This process will include public consultation.
