Watershed Conditions Statement – Water Safety

Watershed Conditions Statement – Water Safety

May 4, 2017

Significant rain is expected across the Maitland and Nine Mile River watersheds beginning this morning and continuing into Saturday. Current weather forecasts are predicting that 50 to 80 mm of rain will fall during this period

The area already received 40 to 70 mm of rain during Sunday and Monday, As a result, ground conditions are fully saturated and the rain arriving over the next few days will quickly run off into watercourses

The average rainfall for the month of May in our area is 87 mm. If predicted rain amounts materialize, we will be close to that average only 6 days into the month. April precipitation was 20% above average.

Bankfull conditions are expected and flooding may occur in low-lying areas. Municipal officials should monitor flood-prone roads.

We remind watershed residents that fast flows and cold water temperatures will create hazardous conditions around all watercourses.

Maitland Conservation is monitoring watershed conditions and will provide an update if warranted.

This message is in effect until 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday May 10, 2017.
